Ambassador's concept of a privately-financed bridge has received support from government officials, business owners and private citizens. The Ambassador Bridge in the Detroit – Windsor area has shown that an international border crossing can be successfully developed and managed by the private sector and has spurred economic growth in that area because of its success. The ability to quickly move traffic (especially truck traffic) through this crossing, with little idling time, speeds commerce and increases the number of growth opportunities available. In October of 2005, the Ambassador Bridge Group proposed expansion of its US Customs inspection facilities and retail development at the Detroit-Windsor crossing. If approved, the project would bring 3,000 jobs into the local economy. Although the concept of a private owned and operated bridge is untraditional, it works and makes economic sense for both Ambassador and this region.
Because of its decades in bridge management expertise, Ambassador Bridge was first invited to the region in November of 1999 to speak to the Public Consensus Review Panel. While the Panel rejected, after little consideration, Ambassador's proposal to construct a bridge within the International Railroad Corridor, support from government leaders, such as U.S. Senator Charles Schumer urged Ambassador to move forward. Schumer encouraged Ambassador work in this region, stating, "Competition among various good plans will lead to the best result in the end."
