Consultation

The Ambassador Niagara Signature Bridge Project has met with members of the Fort Erie community and federal and provincial agencies in Canada to gain an understanding of what the community and government's needs will be, as the project takes shape.

In the United States, our meetings with public agencies have initiated preliminary consultation, as part of the environmental review process that we expect to undertake.  Formal consultation will begin following designation of the United States Department of State as Lead Agency. Prior to this designation, the Ambassador Niagara Signature Bridge Group must submit a Presidential Permit that includes a Draft Environmental Assessment.  This Assessment will form the foundation of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) that will be developed for public review and comment.  To date, Ambassador Niagara has:

  • Met with over 25 regulatory agencies to gather input, including:

      CEAA Meeting
Project staff lead CEAA officials on a tour of the project area, May 17, 2005

    • US Department of State; the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency; Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) Canada; Transport Canada; Environment Canada; Health Canada; Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada; Ontario Ministry of Transportation; NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC); Regional Municipality of Niagara; Greater Buffalo Regional Transportation Council (GBNRTC); Town of Fort Erie, Ontario
  • Discussed the alternative corridors with dozens of local and national political leaders, including:
    • US Senator Charles Schumer and Staff; US Senator Hillary Clinton's Staff; Former US Congressman Jack Quinn's Staff; US Congressman Brian Higgins' Staff; NYS Assemblyman Sam Hoyt; Former Erie County Legislator Charles Swanick; Hon. John Maloney MP; Hon. Rob Nicholson MP; Hon. Tim Hudak MPP; Hon. Kim Craitor MPP; Mayor Wayne Redekop and the Town Council of Fort Erie, Ontario
  • Met with hundreds of individual citizens to discuss the concept
As we move into the formal scoping process, Ambassador Niagara will strive to ensure that we provide multiple opportunities for public involvement. The success of our project depends on the support of the community, and we will make very effort to help you stay informed and stay involved.
